OBJECTIVE: Student will graph and solve systems of two linear equations in two variables.
STANDARDS:
TEKS A.3(F), A.5(C)
CCSS 8.EE.C.8b, HSA-REI.C.6
ACTIVITY: Students will find the solutions to 12 systems of equations showing work on a separate sheet of paper. They will circle the color of their answer choice and color the areas with corresponding problem numbers in the given Christmas picture.
There are 4 levels (total of 48 unique problems). Each level is designed for the application of the specific method.
LEVEL 1: Graphing Method
LEVEL 2: Substitution Method
LEVEL 3: Elimination Method
LEVEL 4: Any Method (mixed methods)
Suggestions for using this resource:
Use this resource after students have been taught all 3 methods. Allow students to choose the method they feel they need to practice. Students who feel proficient using all methods should try Level 4 for increased rigor. The coloring picture and color answer choices are the same for each level allowing students to be discrete about the assignment they chose and for easy grading.

Top 3 Reasons to Use Coloring Activities in the Classroom:
1- Coloring activities minimize off-task student behavior (making it more likely for students to complete the assignment in the allotted time frame) because they want to see what the end result will look like.
2- Coloring activities make self-checking simple for students: “I got blue for #5…how’d you get red?”
3- Coloring activities provide the teacher with a way to quickly assess student understanding while floating around the room: “Marie’s coloring sheet looks off…I better go over to her desk and check on how she’s doing.”
Worried about kids just coloring?…I was too. I require my students to have work shown for each problem as I would with any assignment: “Turning in a beautiful piece of art without the math to back it up doesn’t count as doing your assignment, kiddos!”
