Students will evaluate 16 expressions using the order of operations (with negative numbers) to create a collaborative Christmas/Winter themed mural. There are 15 different coloring sections of the mural to distribute amongst all the students in the class. The sections are color coded based on the answers to the evaluated expressions. Students can work independently or in collaborative pairs. Upon completion, the 15 sections will be assembled to create the full mural, perfect for hanging on the wall as classroom décor!
Increases Student Engagement! Students will be engaged by their curiosity of the “mystery mural” and will want to finish all 16 problems.
Encourages Self-Checking! Students will be more likely to check their work with others and/or ask for help using this activity because their section of the mural is necessary for completion of the full collaborative wall mural.
