OBJECTIVE: Student will multiply binomials.
STANDARDS:
TEKS A.10(B)
CCSS HSA-APR.A.1
ACTIVITY: Students will find the product to 16 problems showing work on a separate sheet of paper. They will circle the color of their answer choice and color the areas with corresponding problem numbers in the given picture.
There are 4 levels (16 problems per level) to provide easy-to-implement differentiated instruction. Each level is progressively more challenging. Examples of each level:
LEVEL 1: (x + 5)(x – 4)
LEVEL 2: (2x + 5)(x – 4)
LEVEL 3: (2x + 5)(3x – 4), including special cases
LEVEL 4: Mixed Levels 1-3
Suggestion for using this resource:
Make several copies of each level and allow students to choose the Level they feel is most suitable for them. After they begin to practice, allow students to change levels if they feel their original choice was too easy or too difficult. Students who feel comfortable multiplying binomials should try Level 4 as a mixed review. The coloring picture and color answer choices are the same for each level allowing students to be discrete about the assignment they chose and for easy grading. Answer keys provided.
Top 3 Reasons to Use Coloring Activities in the Classroom:
1- Coloring activities minimize off-task student behavior (making it more likely for students to complete the assignment in the allotted time frame) because they want to see what the end result will look like.
2- Coloring activities make self-checking simple for students: “I got blue for #5…how’d you get red?”
3- Coloring activities provide the teacher with a way to quickly assess student understanding while floating around the room: “Marie’s coloring sheet looks off…I better go over to her desk and check on how she’s doing.”
Worried about kids just coloring?…I was too. I require my students to have work shown for each problem as I would with any assignment: “Turning in a beautiful piece of art without the math to back it up doesn’t count as doing your assignment, kiddos!”
